“There's nothing a teacher treasures more than to see their pupil succeed.”

friend-vt

Il aime son ami: il l’aime (direct object pronoun)

Pronouns replace the nouns and can be the subject of the verbs (je, tu, il, on etc...) but also the object of the verbs. The interactive exercises that I have designed are about direct object pronouns and indirect object pronouns.

There are rules* about where pronouns go in the sentence, if you have more than one kind, the following table is a start!

je

tu

il/elle/on

nous

vous

ils/elles

ne

me/m’

te/t’

se/s’

nous

vous

le/l’

la/l’

les

lui

leur

y

en

verbe

pas

If the verb (or auxilliary verb) starts with a vowel, m’ replaces me, t’ replaces te etc... (see table above)

All pronouns must go in front of the verb. In the perfect tense the pronoun comes before the avoir or être verb (verbes auxiliaires).

Exemple:

Je le lui ai acheté  puis je le lui ai donné. Cependant, sa soeur étant jalouse, il lui en a fait cadeau! I bought it for him then I gave it to him. However, his sister being jealous, he gave it to her as a present!

If there are 2 verbs, for example in the case of the immediate future, the pronoun goes in front of the verb it refers to.

Exemple (continuation of the above):

Je vais le punir et lui faire regretter sa générosité... I am going to punish him and make him regret his generosity...

Two more pronouns, the last 2 to be go before the verb: Y and En
