“There's nothing a teacher treasures more than to see their pupil succeed.”

Are you worried about low self-confidence?

then read on...

Many people would like to succeed but a little voice in their head argues that they cannot. Recognising this little voice is crucial, if you want it to stop feeding you with negative thoughts.

Did you know that your brain has a filtering system? That’s because you can’t concentrate on too many things at once and yet your brain has to deal with a massive amount of data, every second of the day. So, it has a filtering system to cope with all the information it is receiving. Now, imagine that the kind of information your brain receives is mostly negative. Imagine that you concentrate on what you can’t do instead of what you can do... You are training your brain to notice these negative thoughts.

Not sure what I mean by filtering system? Here are some examples:

1. You have just got a lovely blue bike as a birthday present, it is the most beautiful bike you have ever seen, or is it ............. now that you have got one, everywhere you turn, you see one .... how strange......

2. You hear your neighbour talk to your mum. She is saying: “ it is really strange, ever since I found out I was pregnant, all I can see is pregnant women and women with small babies, they are everywhere!” ...... “curiouser and curiouser” as Alice would say....

3. Your friend tells you about a new video game which you’d never heard about. Next thing you know, you hear about it at school, on the radio, on the TV and even read about it in your favourite magazine. What is going on????

Now do you get the picture? Things that you are suddenly aware of, seem to have a life of their own, they multiply .......

What do you think would happen if you had a bad day. It started with you being late for school (you can have a very similar scenario for the office!) because

a) your alarm went off but you went back to sleep

b) your bus was stuck in a traffic jam

c) you tried to run from the bus stop to school but your fell and twisted your ankle, making it difficult to walk

Once at school, you had to creep into the assembly but the door slammed shut behind you and everyone turned around and stared.

You had to see the Headmaster at break for disrupting the assembly.

In your haste to get to school, you forgot your planner but every teacher seems to want to write in it and you have to make the same excuse time and time again...

You are starting to feel persecuted and very sorry for yourself and consequently you are a bit short with your friends and now they refuse to speak to you....

Ohlalala! quelle catastrophe!!!!

Now can you guess how the day is going to end if you continue noticing the bad things? It is going to get worse!!!!!!!!!!!

So what do you do to stop this vicious circle? First you need to recognise what is happening. Next, you have to see the other side of the coin, the positive side and act...

a) you went back to sleep because you needed more sleep: go to bed earlier next time.

b) you come late to assembly, watch the door next time and if it does make a noise, look at whoever is taking the assembly and mouth “sorry”, or see them later, before they have to speak to you.

c) you had to see the Headmaster but he did not give you a detention, he just wanted to see if you realised what you had done (see b)

d) the first teacher asks for your planner, you discover that you have not got it, from then on be pro-active and tell the teachers at the beginning of the class, before they find out! Honesty is always the best policy.

e) you have an argument with your friends, again be pro-active, tell them before any nastiness starts that you are in a foul mood because ... and soon you will almost become a joke and everyone will laugh with you...

And remember, tomorrow is another day....

What has that to do with being confident? It has everything to do with it! If you suffer from lack of confidence, you need to be more aware of what you are good at then what you are not so good at. Dwell on the positive, gloss over the negative. If you catch yourself being negative, pessimistic and generally “down” on yourself, train yourself to say “ yes, however ...” and force yourself to think of at least 2 positives for every negatives. Soon, remember me telling you earlier that you can’ think about more than 9 things at the same time, you will have only room in your consciousness for positive thoughts....

 Look for the positive!
